May 2008: ENTERPRISING BRITAIN COMPETITION Sub-regional Winner Announced
Congratulations to Ashfield Skills Centre winner of the Alliance Sub-regional heat of Enterprising Britain 2008
MINISTER HONOURS ASHFIELD SKILLS CENTRE’S COMMITMENT TO ENTERPRISE
The Alliance Sub-Regional Strategic Partnership chose Ashfield Skills Centre to represent North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire in the regional finals of the Enterprising Britain Competition.
MP for Ashfield Geoff Hoon joined assistant head teacher, Joan Smalley and Craig Edson of the Alliance SSP to award the £500 prize for winning the sub-regional heats of the competition and to honour the centre’s achievements.
These include…
- 23 jobs created (14 from new business and nine created by the centre itself)
- Two new businesses and two national businesses established at the centre, as well as assistance and advice to 67 businesses to aid growth and development
- 20 jobseekers assisted into employment, 56 new apprenticeships and 177 people assisted in skills development
- Creation of 6,000 sq metres of new premises for community use
…in just five months (from September 2007 to January 2008)
The £5.3m project was selected as the sub-region’s ‘ambassador for enterprise’ because of its unique approach to fostering entrepreneurship among students and the wider community, the strength of its links with industrial and commercial partners and the synergy that has been achieved between the school and a broad range of public and private sector partners.
Strong links with employers such as the RAC and Carillion help ensure learners of all ages obtain the right qualifications and skills to develop careers in key growth sectors such as engineering, construction, health & care, tourism & culture, leisure & hospitality, food & drink production and financial & business services.
In addition, students gain hands-on experience with on-site enterprises and support and encouragement to set up in business themselves. For example, A-level ICT students support Nottinghamshire Business Venture start-ups by designing websites and marketing material. Future plans include the establishment of a commercial outlet for PC repair and manufacture to be run by students from the centre.
Chief executive of the Alliance Sub-Regional Strategic Partnership Andrew Street commented: “For decades, towns like Ashfield relied on large employers in traditional industries where hard work and loyalty were the pre-requisites for long-term job security – which is rarely the case today. The demise of the coalmining and hosiery industries have left our communities among the most deprived in Britain. New technologies demand ongoing training and our communities need entrepreneurial skills and support for enterprise to create their own, sustainable economic futures.”
Ashfield School head teacher Ian Fraser said: “The school feels that the opportunities opened up by this enterprising venture and the rest of the new developments have been important in promoting a positive awareness in the local community. Students view and experience the facilities and tell parents, who tell friends and, as a result, the ethos of the site and the raised expectations of the whole area is enhanced.”
Geoff Hoon said: “The Ashfield Skills Centre is an exemplary model of best practice in training. It provides people with the opportunity to improve their skills and gain employment. The Ashfield Skills Centre deserves to be recognised for its achievements and is a strong candidate to take the regional and even national honours in the Enterprising Britain Competition.”
PICTURE CAPTION: Geoff Hoon MP and Craig Edson, Alliance SSP present Mrs Joan Smalley, Assistant Head, Ashfield School with a prize of £500. They are accompanied by Ashfield school students and Lyndsay Fidler, a local business owner whose bespoke corsetry and millinery business is located at the centre. Lyndsay also provides textiles training for A level students and the wider community.
Friday 16th May, ASC represented the area at the regional heat of the competition, but BIO-City was selected to represent the East Midlands at the national final later in the year.
